Cassandra Shore began performing Middle Eastern dance in 1975, and her intensity, musicality, and smooth technique quickly set her apart from the average performer. She has made over twenty research trips to the Middle East, investigating Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and North Africa in her search for cultural understanding, authentic dance techniques, and inspiration. She has studied ( and continues to study) with many of the finest teachers and choreographers of Middle Eastern dance, including Mahmoud Reda, director of the Reda Group, Cairo, Egypt, and former Under Secretary of Culture; Mohammed Khalil, former director of the National Folklore Group of Egypt; Vivian Hamamjian; former member of Caracalla Ballet, Beirut; Ragia Hassan, choreographer to Egypt's top dance stars and former member of the Reda Group; and the late Ibrahim Farrah, director of the Near East Ensemble, NYC, the first professional Middle Eastern dance performing company in the US. In 1978, Ms. Shore founded the Cassandra School in order to bring her students to a higher level of expertise and cultural understanding. The School now offers 29 classes per week in Minneapolis, Bloomington, and St. Paul, in five proficiency levels, from beginning to professional, in technique, choreography, performance skills, dance conditioning, and cultural studies. Ms. Shore formed Jawaahir Dance Company in 1989 as a vehicle for her unique choreographic vision. No where in the Upper Midwest were audiences able to see Arabic dances other than the stereotypical "bellydance", and it is Ms. Shore's mission to introduce the rich world of Arabic dance and music culture to local audiences. Since then, Jawaahir has been recognized for its ground-breaking repertory of traditional, modern and fusion works of Middle Eastern and contemporary dance. Through both outreach and COMPAS/Young Audiences educational programs, Jawaahir brings the art of Middle Eastern dance to more than 4,000 K-12 students annually. Today, Cassandra is known as a master teacher, star performer, and creative artist in the field of Middle Eastern dance. Her work has been rewarded with grants, commissions and awards. She offers workshops, concerts, and master classes worldwide, teaching and performing in locations such as Egypt, Morocco, Finland, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, as well as the United States and Canada. For more information on Cassandra's work, please see her web site at www.jawaahir.org
