Nisha
Habiba Presents Nisha Punjabi in a workshop on
Bollywood for Belly Dancers

February 20, 2010, 1 - 4 pm, $90

**This workshop is for Middle Eastern Dancers who have no experience
with Indian Dance.**

Bollywood dance is a fusion style from the film-making capital of India: Bombay. This dynamic, modern style combines elements of classical and folk dance from India, the Middle East and Western popular dance, performed to the latest pop tunes and Bollywood movie soundtracks. Nisha will introduce Middle Eastern dancers to the hand and arm movements, foot patterns and other classic elements of Bollywood dance. Some of you will know Nisha from her wonderful performance at the Cassandra workshop show. She charmed the audience and had everyone wanting to learn.

Learning the art of Indian dancing enhances body posture and alignment, fitness and suppleness, poses and graceful hand movements, emotion and expression, and most of all it is a source of immense fun. It is a healthy, low impact way to get and stay fit. Bollywood dance develops speed, strength and stamina, and burns more calories per hour than most other dance styles.

Choreographer and dancer Nisha, (originator of the Jhankaar workout) creates a unique style of living poetry for her students through dance. With over 20 years of teaching experience, performing, and commitment to ongoing study of the classical, contemporary, and folk dances of India, her goal is for every student to become skillful in the true culture of the Indian Arts through dance. Nisha specializes in teaching and performing choreographic presentations on various semi-classical forms, folk dance styles, and contemporary Bollywood themes.

The event will take place at the Performance Garage in Philadelphia. It has a large airy studio with mirrors and an exceptional performance space. This new facility is part of the Avenue of the Arts and is close to area hotels. We will be in Studio B, a large mirrored studio, 31’x41’

About Nisha:

Choreographer and dancer Nisha, creates a unique style of living poetry for her students through dance. With over 20 years of teaching experience and commitment to ongoing study of the classical, contemporary, and folk dances of India, her goal is for every student to become skillful in the true culture of the Indian Arts through dance.

Nisha’s dance career started in the USA, with teaching Indian culture to her son, by bringing alive the Indian mythology and other aspects of her culture through dance. Hereafter, this inspired her to perform for both cultural and educational reasons spreading knowledge and awareness of their Indian culture and traditions through dance to a wide and appreciative American and Indian audience in Washington, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware. Her initial purpose has always been to serve as a mediator of cultural preservation, presentation, and exchange of dance forms for both the dancers and audiences of all backgrounds.

Dancing to a wide range of shows from celebrating Asian Awareness Day, Diversity Week, for companies such as HSBC, JP Morgan & Chase, Chase Manhattan, Astra Zeneca, Bank One, Hercules, DuPont, etc.; to customizing workshops; to dancing for young audiences in different schools, temples, opera houses & churches in Delaware; to teaching dance to 3 years and up to all ages at various schools, shows, and events; & judging inter-collegiate dance competitions at the University of Delaware for the past 6 years, has enriched not only her life, but the lives of all her students and the audiences that she has touched through dance.

Nisha specializes in teaching and performing choreographic presentations on various semi-classical forms, folk dance styles, and contemporaneous bollywood themes. Distinctive blends of dance and music styles, old and new art forms, are all used in new ways to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future.

For Nisha dance is bringing closer together, enriching and crossing cultural barriers in an ambassadorial, artistic, sophisticated and in an enjoyable style that proves that music and dance are a universal language.
